See our work in action

We believe in planting the seed early and giving children the best possible start in life through our Early Child Development work at our Community Based Childcare Centres.

Have a look at this video to see some of our work in action.

Early Child Development

Child malnutrition is a major problem in Malawi.  Many children simply don’t get enough to eat. Our centres provide a daily nutritious meal for them.  Joshua began with the establishment of a single CBCC, for vulnerable children in Pensulo village, 10 Km from the city of Blantyre. Since Joshua was founded, we have helped construct 22 of these Centres and still run 14 in villages across the region.

Joshua aims to encourage rural communities to take part in development activities which will improve the lives of vulnerable groups, especially orphans. One of the central ways that Joshua initiates this is through its support of these centres. Joshua is now operating in 19 rural communities with 10 CBCCs, some of which have been built by our organisation. We help by supplying food, cooking equipment, seeds for crops, fruit trees, educational materials and training for the carers who work voluntarily.

In total, Joshua is helping close to 1000 children by ensuring that they have at least one nutritious meal each day and the opportunity for pre-school education and health care.

Education

A lack of access to quality education is a huge problem in Malawi. Many children have to walk for up to two hours to reach the closest school, thousands don’t complete their primary education, let alone secondary and without an education they struggle to break out of the cycle of poverty.

We believe that every child has the right to an education and we currently work with 9 primary schools and 28 secondary schools in Blantyre rural. After we established our pre-school and primary programme, we became very aware of the lack of secondary education in Pensulo. Primary school education is free in Malawi, but secondary education is not. As a result thousands of young people are denied an education, and this keeps them trapped in poverty.  With the support of the local community, we decided to fund the construction of the first ever Secondary School in Pensulo.  The Joshua Secondary School (JOSS) was founded in 1999 and with demand has grown over the years. It now consists of two classes for each form (1-4) and has an enrolment of over 600 students.  The school was successfully transferred to government control in 2016 and Joshua supports students to attend schools near their home with a bursary programme.

Community Projects

We listen to the members of our communities to understand what support they need.  We then endeavour to provide the means to make sustainable, community driven solutions.

This might mean the development of income generation projects,  community construction projects or setting up workshops and training sessions for members of our communities.  These help develop vital infrastructure and solve problems that these communities face whilst also helping with poverty reduction – giving communities a long-term chance of breaking the cycle of poverty.

Emergency Relief

When required, Joshua is able to respond to the emergency needs of communities and get help to where it is needed most.

Over the years, we have provided our communities with the support they needed to help get them back on their feet or launched initiatives to raise awareness and provide them with knowledge and resources to face the challenges that have come their way.
